PRESS RELEASE, March 20, 2006
Cabrillo College Theatre Arts Department presents Inherit the Wind as its Spring, 2006 Production. One of the most outstanding dramas of our time, Inherit the Wind, written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, is a "human comedy" inspired by the historical Scopes "monkey" which took place in the intense heat of a Tennessee summer, and which pitted the Bible against Darwin. Our production has a dynamic and dedicated cast of over thirty community members and student actors. Sarah Albertson is directing. Skip Epperson is designing the set. Sarah and Skip last worked together on The Visit in 2003. Since our entire planet seems to be in the midst of a holy war, with Christians fighting Moslems, Moslems fighting Jews, and even Christians fighting Christians (at least in U.S. courts), this play continues to be very timely. And what's all the fuss? Ultimately we just can't agree on where we came from and what Nature is all about. Inherit the Wind vividly captures the emotional, spiritual, and moral turmoil of a battle between religious fundamentalism and scientific rationalism. Both a serious modern morality play, and an entertaining carnival sideshow, this play imaginatively recreates the fateful confrontation between the two original protagonists - Clarence Darrow, and William Jennings Bryan. We have invited distinguished real-life scientists to represent onstage the scientists who were never allowed to testify in the original trial. Their presence inspires us to consider the timeliness of the issues in this play. So far Cabrillo Biology instructor Robin McFarland, and Anthropology Instructors, Charles Smith, and Alan Lonnberg will be among these supernumeraries. Cabrillo College History instructor, Michael Mangin will lead a discussion of the issues raised by the play after the April 23 Sunday matinee.
Remaining performances are April 21, 22, and 23, and April 28, 29, and 30.
Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 3PM. |
